Hi, I’m Melanie and I am a young African woman living in Kenya after spending 16 years of my life in the U.K.. Whilst living in the U.K., I started learning about natural alternatives that I could implement into my daily hygiene routine after suffering with allergies and eczema. Holistic living became a passion of mine and I decided that I wanted to start my own line of organic body care products.
This was a major driving force behind my decision to move back to Kenya, as this was where I wanted to make this happen. I also knew like many people in the diaspora, that one day I would want to live in my hometown Nairobi, but for a long time I didn’t know if or when that would happen. It did. At the end of September 2016, I arrived back in Kenya with hopes, dreams, and anticipation of what was to come.
I realised early on that the existing local brands selling natural and organic products were not getting the recognition they deserved, but also, a lot of people didn’t know about the importance using of organic, natural products, or where to find them. This was my “Ah-ha!” moment and how Cocoa Cure was conceptualized. I put my brand on the backburner and decided to create an online platform including skin, hair, beauty and health products from local Kenyan brands, which quickly became brands across Africa and its diaspora. I felt it was important to include diaspora owned brands, having been a part of this group myself and understanding the connection many Africans still have to their home countries.
Exactly a year to the day that I moved back to Kenya, I achieved one of my dreams. I’m proud to present this platform to you and I hope it will change people’s lives just as it has changed mine.
